NEWS - Nativity Baby Mother Found: Will Not Be Charged Protected By Safe Haven Laws

5 Hours Old New Baby 

On Monday a baby wrapped in towels with its umbilical cord still attached was found in the Holy Child of Jesus Church, Richmond Hill, Queens, New York, by the church custodian, Jose Moran. Emergency services immediately took the baby to hospital. He is in excellent health. 

A mother who left her 5-hours new born son at the Church will not be charged, neither will she be named. The mother was interviewed by Richard Brown, Queens Borough District Attorney, who said: "After a full review of all the facts and circumstances surrounding the discovery of a new born infant this past Monday in a creche inside the Holy Child Jesus Church - including locating and interviewing the mother - my office has determined that no criminal prosecution of the child's mother is warranted." The DA further stated that "it appears that the mother, in this case, felt the new born child would be found safely in the church and chose to place the baby in the manger because it was the warmest place in the church, and further she returned the following morning the make sure the baby had been found."

After thorough investigations, CCTV footage was viewed showing the mother entering a shop and leaving with newly purchased towels. Footage also showed her entering the Church with the baby and also leaving without him. 

New York's safe haven laws allow newborn babies to be left at Churches but it must be left with someone or the authorities must be immediately informed. Other safe haven places are hospitals, fire stations and police stations. The mother gave up her child in accordance with the Safe Haven law. 

The Parish priest Reverend Christopher Ryan Heanue said: "it's a beautiful story. I pray it's a story that will make people appreciate the gifts of life." The Bishop of Brooklyn Octavio Cisneros described the baby as a "miracle child." 

The baby boy will be adopted.
