It seems like yesterday that I watched The Wiz ... that was in 1978. It was such an exciting time because it starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, Ted Ross, Nipsey Russell, Thelma Carpenter, Theresa Merritt, Stanley Greene, Richard Pryor and Mabel King.

Fast forward NBC (as it has done for the past couple of years with Sound of Music Live and Peter Pan Live) is bringing forth another Happy Holidays treat in the production of The WIZ Live! This particular production was written by Harvey Fierstein, directed by Kenny Leon and Matthew Diamond and produced by Universal Television and Cirque du Soleil. The composers are Charlie Smalls, Timothy Graphenreed, Harold Wheeler, Luther Vandross, George Faison, Schaffer Smith (Ne-Yo), Elijah Kelley, Harvey Mason Jr. and Stephen Oremus.

The WIZ Live! stars Shanice Williams as Dorothy, Queen Latifah as The Wiz, Mary J. Blige as Evillene, David Alan Grier as The Lion, Ne-Yo as The Tin Man, Elijah Kelley as Scarecrow, Common as The Bouncer, Uzo Aduba as Glinda, Amber Riley as Addaperle and Stephanie Mills as Auntie Em.

Exciting stuff! I trust we will catch this wonderful piece of work over here in Nigeria (and the rest of the world) very soon. In the meantime, I say, congratulations to the entire crew and cast ... I already know that this is a magnificent job well done.

  3. It did good with over 11 million TV viewers. There is still pay per view, DVD and downloads to consider.
