Over the next 14 days approximately 1,589,175 candidates will be sitting for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) across 521 centersall over Nigeria and 8 others abroad, including Accra in Ghana, Buea in Republic of Cameroon, Cotonou in Republic of Benin, London in United Kingdom, Jeddah in Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia, Johannesburg in Republic of South Africa, Addis in Ethiopia and Abidjan in Cote d’Ivoire.
The organisation in charge of administering he examination, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, (JAMB), charged N5,650 per form per candidate and has made approximately N9 billion from the sales. At today's currency converter this is $45,226,170.00.
According to the examination body’s Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, a total of 201 visually impaired candidates and 343 prison inmates will also take part in the examination. He said the inmates will have access to computers at both the Kaduna and Ikoyi prisons.
Imo State recorded the highest number of candidates in this year’s examination with a total of 102,727, while Osun and Oyo states followed with 83, 060 and 81,065 respectively.The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Zamfara State recorded the lowest registratrations with 5,069 and 7,254 candidates respectively.
