Baroness Valerie Amos
Baroness Valerie Amos becomes the first female black University leader. She will preside over the School of African and Oriental Studies.
The 61 year old Baroness was born in Guyana, her qualifications are: BA Sociology University of Warwick; MA Cultural Studies University of Birmingham. She was awarded an Honorary Professorship at Thames Valley University, (Honorable Doctorate) HonDUniv Sterling, (Honorable Doctor of Laws) Hon LDD Warwick and Hon LDD Leicester.
Baroness Amos has served as: Secretary of State for International Development (May 2003-October 2003); Leader of the House of Lords, Lord President of The Council (2003-2007); The British High Commissioner to Australia (2009-2010) and Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (2010-2015).
The Baroness took some cultural studies at University of East Anglia as she investigated the transition from school to work for black girls. She is co-founder and Patron of The Amos Bursary, an organisation that promotes tertiary educational opportunities for young men of African and Caribbean descent in the United Kingdom.
The leadership of SOAS was previously held by Professor Paul Webley who has since retired. The Baroness regards her new position as an opportunity to grow, learn and one what will enable her to utilize her knowledge, experience and skill sets.
The Chair of SOAS Governing Body, Mr. Tim Miller said "Valerie Amos is a major figure on the international stage. Like SOAS she is renowned for formidable intellect, international outlook, cultural fluency and engagement with contemporary issues. She also brings impressive experience of operational and strategic management to the role. We look forward to welcoming her at SOAS."
