SPORTS - England's 3Lionesses FIFA World Cup Fluke Loss

Laura Bassett

At 1-1 and with only minutes before a highly anticipated penalty kick phase, England bowed out of the FIFA Women's World Cup Tournament on what seemed like a one in a billion play. Defender Laura Bassett attempted to clear a last minute cross only to watch her own ball roll of her feet into her own net. Earlier, the Defender revealed on social media that she felt recovered, prepped and fueled.

A triumphant home coming was not to be. Ian Wright said what the world was thinking:

Mark Sampson

32 year old Coach Mark Sampson said he is: "proud of his group, players and staff. England gave their all. We're a team who will go home knowing that we could not have done any more....we could not have given any more. We gave our all....OK, she hurting now. Tomorrow morning she will take up, she will have 22 teammates, group of staff, give her a hug, tell her how proud we are of her, and we'll do the same for the whole group....you can see the regard in which the team hold Laura and all their teammates in their reaction. Of course, every single member of my group is devastated. When that ball went over the line we were devastated. But our first point of call is to look out for your own. Laura is one of us. She's one of our team. We get around her. We console her. We're going to cry and we tell her how proud we are of her. Because without her we wouldn't be in the semifinal."

Obviously the United Kingdom will be doing a lot more for Women's Soccer. Rio Ferdinand encouraged:

England's performance was outstanding, no doubt the World Cup will make it's UK tour in 2019. In the meantime, all caps, hats 'n' wigs off to Coach Sampson and our Lasses, The 3Lionesses. Here...here... ROOOAAAR...!
