Malachi Kirby
It has been confirmed by Deadline that Malachi Kirby will play the indomitable Kunta Kinte in a remake of Alex Haley's landmark and groundbreaking novel, Roots: The Saga of An American Family. It will be made by A+E Network and the History Channel. In an incredible twist of fate, LeVar Burton, the star and lead actor who played Kunta Kinte in the original 1977 ABC-TV series, will co-executive produce this new project.
The award winning David L. Wolper was the original executive producer. Confirmed reports state that the History Channel acquired the rights from Alex Haley's estate and David L. Wolper's son, Mark Wolper. The new executive producers are Will Packer, Mark Toberoff together with Mark Wolper. In addition to LeVar Burton, other co-executive producers are Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal.
Malachi Kirby is scheduled to commence work next month in South Africa and New Orleans, Lousiana, USA. The 25 year old former Eastenders actor is represented by Femi Oguns and Jonathan Hall of the Identity Group Agency - the very same people behind fellow Brit, John Gboyega.
