A 10-year-old has made her New York Fashion Week debut, after being inspired to create stylish clothes for girls of all sizes after being bullied about her weight.

Egypt Ifynanya "Ify" Ufele is the designer behind Chubiiline, an all-size clothing brand for girls.

The Queens native started the brand (which is pronounced "chubby line") after being bullied for her weight while at school.
"I was bullied and they called me all kinds of names," the fifth grader told Today. "One time I got stabbed with a pencil."
However, Ufele's confidence has improved greatly after discovering her special skill.

"People applaud me and tell me I'm good at fashion," she said.

Chubiiline's prices range from $US50 to $US100.

The label's website describes the brightly coloured wax cloth designs as "bringing Africa to America, one design at a time".

Ufele, who is managed by her mother, told YM Fashion Magazine in September she was inspired to design so that "no plus size kid like [her] ever feels left out of the fashion world". She also revealed she learned to sew and cut patterns aged seven with the help of her grandmother, who is an "expert seamstress".
It seems an eye for fashion runs in the family.

Ufele cites her older sister Sade, who studies at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and also has her own label, as her inspiration.

"In five years I see myself in [New York's] High School for [Art &] Design," she said.

  1. What an incredible story. Instead of being negatively reactive she is positively proactive thanks to the encouragement of her family. This is great news. Nigerian-American kids rock!
