Ray Tomlinson
The inventor of the modern email as we know it, Mr. Ray Tomlinson has died. His passage which on Saturday, was confirmed yesterday by his employer, Raytheon Co. Mr. Tomlinson was 74 years old.
Tomlinson was a Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate, Computer Programmer, Electrical Engineer and Inventor. He brought a complete revolution fundamentally changing the way people communicate.
Before Tomlinson's invention, email existed in a limited format and messages could be shared among people within a small framework. In 1971, he created the very first network person-to-person email. He chose the "@" symbol to connect the user name with the destination address. The "@" is now a universal cultural icon. "It's the only preposition on the keyboard." Tomlinson said.
In 2011 Tomlinson was listed at Number 4 on the MIT 150 List of the top innovators and ideas from MIT. He was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2012. In spite of his numerous accolades and awards, Tomlinson was known to for his humility and modesty. It is said that Tomlinson was not a frequent checker of email.
