President Akufo-Addo has said that as from September 2017, all public senior high schools will be free. The institutions also include agricultural, technical and vocational colleges.

The President is fulfilling an election promise by stating that "the government of Ghana will fund the cost of senior high school for all those who qualify for entry from the 2017/2018 academic year onwards."

President Akufo-Addo has further emphasized that in addition to no fees, there will be no fees for admission, libraries, science centers, computer labs, exams and utilities, Furthermore, all textbooks, meals and boarding will also be free.

The President is of the opinion that after sixty years of independence, Ghana's progress "is slower than it should have been." He sees a direct correlation lack of education and slow economic development.

To the rousing applause of a delighted crowd, President Akufo-Addo expounded: "I want every Ghanian child to attend secondary school not just for what they learn in books, but for the life experiences they will gain. I want each of them to look in the morning, each morning, every morning and know that they can achieve anything they dream of when they complete their studies. I want them to be confident that what they study is relevant to the demands of tomorrow ... I want every Ghanian child to be comfortable in the knowledge that when they work hard, they are as capable as anyone else in the world. I want parents to look upon their children with pride as they watch them mature into self-confident adults."
