POLITICS - Professor Mahmood Yakubu Is INEC New Chairman

Professor Mahmood Yakubu


At a Council of State Presidential Villa meeting yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari approved and appointed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). 

An Oxford University  Doctor of Philosophy, Yakubu is a Professor of Political History and International Studies. An expert in counter terrorism, terrorism and guerrilla warfare, he is also a Lecturer the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and part of Oby Ezekwesili's educational transformation team. At the 2014 National Conference Secretariat, Professor Yakubu stood as Assistant Secretary of Finance and Administration.

Amina Bala Zakari is still the Acting Chairperson. At this juncture it is not known how soon Mahmood Yakubu will begin his new position.
