Midway last year, Ben Ayade of Cross Rivers State lamented the expense of importing fabrics. He promised to open a garment factory in Calabar with a focus employing youths, widows and with a view to generating over a thousand jobs.  Over six thousands applicants have since jostled for various positions.

Since the Calabar Garment Factory is expected to open next month, Mr. Paul Arkwright, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria has stated that the United Kingdom is keen to train the required manpower. Mr. Arkwright confirmed his willingness to send expatriates with expertise to Calabar to assist in textile manufacturing, textile design and related areas.

The High Commissioner expounded: "The partnership with the UK is a strong partnership and we are hopeful that with commitment to training and guaranteed technical competence, Nigeria can maximize its potential in the garment sub-sector of the economy."

Governor Ayade's expectation is for the factory to provide fabrics for the manufacturing of army, police, paramilitary and school uniforms.

  1. Before oil, we had textile factories. What a pity.

  2. This is a good project with good intentions but Nigeria's supposed be past getting "expertise" from UK. What have our so called fashion designers been doing. Govt has not been supporting them at all. China's been copying our designs & importing them to Nigeria while Naija govt sips wine with chinese leaders! SMH.
