A Young Nigerian With Albinism
Albinism is the complete opposite of Melanism. Albinism is a congenital disorder and a hereditary condition that is characterized by complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes due to the absence or defect of a copper-containing enzyme called Tyrosinase which is involved in the production of melanin. Albinism is characterized by the absence of melanin in the eyes, skin, hair or cuticle. A person who has albinism is known as an Albino.
Apparently the West African Examination Council (WAEC) intends to create unique centers for Albinos in the 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Exams. Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu, a WAEC Public Affairs Officer confirmed that the Council will provide the correct lighting and ventilation in the centers. He said: "I can not say how many centers we will have across the states because registration is still ongoing ... once we have candidates from a state indicating that he or she is an Albino, we shall make provision for them. Their centers will have the right ventilation and lighting to make sure they are not discriminated against.
