Boxing Great, Manny Pacquiao
Nike has terminated its commercial contractual relationship with the Boxer, Manny Pacquiao after his comments about people in same-sex relationships. The Boxer said gays are worse than animals. While in the Phillipines, Pacquiao gave an interview to TMZ earlier this week stating "they know how to distinguish male from female. If we approve of male on male, female on female, then man is worse than animals."
Nike disapproved of the Boxing Champion's comments: "We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent." A Nike spokesperson said the company opposes discrimination and supports and will always continue to support all the rights of bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgender people.
People put together a petition on Change.org urging Nike to drop Manny Pacquiao - the site obtained plenty of support together with thousands of signatures - Nike eventually obliged causing Gay advocate to praise the sportswear company's decision.
Deena Fidas, the head of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, Workplace Equality Program Division said, "Quite simply, homophobic or anti-LGBT remarks have no place in a successful business or its spokespeople."
Manny Pacquiao has since expressed his apologies and regret over the matter. The 37 year old Boxing Champion is actually running for a seat in the Philippines Senate.
