As Ugandans turned out to participate in electing a new President yesterday, they faced the peculiar situation of social media blockages, bans and censorship. Ugandans were prevented from sharing information and news on major platforms like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.

President Yoweri Museveni who has been in office since 1986, confirmed that all social media platforms were banned to prevent people from spreading and telling lies. Museveni is running for office again with the hope gaining another five victorious years. When questioned further in a television interview Museveni said: "Some people misuse those pathways. You know how they misuse them - telling lies. If you want a right then use it properly."

In the midst of the uproar and condemnation, some Ugandans have found a way around the ban, blockage and censorship through a Virtual Private Network (VPN) by re-directing internet activity through a computer in a different country.

Former Head of State, President of Nigeria and Commonwealth Observer in Uganda, Olusegun Obasanjo, has condemned the ban as an infringement on the liberty of all Ugandans stating that "it is ill advised if anyone has blocked social media." He condemned the disgraceful tardiness of polling stations: "Delays of three, four, five and even six hours, especially in Kampala, are absolutely inexcusable and will not inspire trust and confidence in the system and the process."

  1. I don't understand this. Social media is a great deal in everything these days. You can't just ban it

  2. Rubbish! How come this guy is still President after 30 years. This says a lot about Ugandans. Wouldn't happen in Naija or any other parts of the world. It's up to the people ya'll.
