Yesterday the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) suspended its nationwide planned nationwide strike. The industrial action was suspended because of pleas by the government to meet their demands before the end of the ultimatum which will expire at midnight on the 10th of March.
Also effective yesterday, the union has given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to meet its demands. Mr Biobellemoye Josiah, the National Chairman of JOHESU told news media members that his union met with the Minister of State for Health, the Minister of Labour and the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. Other government representatives were the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health; and Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation. Representatives of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Budget Office, Department of State Security Services, and the Director, Industrial Relations and Trade Union Services, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment were also in attendance.
Mr. Josiah warned that the JOHESU will definitely proceed with the strike if the Government fails to redeem its promises by the expiration of the deadline. “We rejected the time lag of 30 days as requested by the Government and settled for 21 days for the extension of the ultimatum ending March 10.
Mr. Josiah has appealed to the Nigerian general public "whose interest we have considered" to impress on the Government to adhere to all promises and keep her side of the collective bargaining process.
